Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
More than being neat or particular
OCD is often misunderstood as liking things clean or organized. In reality, it is a cycle of unwanted, distressing thoughts and the urges to make them go away. Many people with OCD suffer quietly for years, embarrassed by thoughts that go against everything they value.
Understanding OCD
OCD has two parts:
-
Obsessions: intrusive thoughts, images or urges that cause anxiety, doubt or disgust. Common themes include contamination, harm, relationships, morality, religion, sexuality and "just right" feelings.
-
Compulsions: actions or mental rituals done to reduce that distress. These include checking, washing, reassurance-seeking, reviewing, avoiding, counting or mentally "solving" the thought.
Compulsions bring quick relief, which teaches the brain the thought was dangerous. So the thoughts return, often stronger. Having an intrusive thought does not mean you want it or will act on it. OCD targets what matters most to you.
