Couples Therapy in Toms River, NJ

For couples who are tired of having the same fight.

Most couples do not come to therapy because everything is great. They come because the same argument keeps showing up, or because things have gone quiet in a way that does not feel good, or because something happened and trust took a hit.   Couples work is a core part of The Therapy Cove. Together we will slow down the cycle you are stuck in, understand what each of you actually needs, and practice new ways of showing up for each other. We are direct and warm, and we will stay with you through the hard parts.

When couples come in

  • The same argument keeps repeating, and neither of you feels heard

  • You feel more like roommates or co-managers than partners

  • You are rebuilding trust after infidelity or an affair

  • You are engaged or planning to marry and want a strong start (premarital therapy)

  • A big change has landed: a new baby, a move, a career shift, a blended family, an empty nest

  • Intimacy and sexual health have become a source of tension or distance

  • One of you pursues while the other pulls away, or one of you carries most of the load (codependency and attachment patterns)

How sessions work

We aim to stay fair to both of you. We will name the patterns we see, including the uncomfortable ones, and help each of you take responsibility for your part without turning therapy into a trial. Our approach combines Emotion Focused Therapy, which looks at the emotional cycle between partners rather than who is right, with attachment-informed, psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral tools. The work is trauma-informed.

The work may include:

  • Understanding the cycle you fall into when things get tense

  • Communicating in ways your partner can actually hear

  • Repairing after a fight or a break in trust

  • Talking about what each of you wants from intimacy and closeness

  • Practicing new habits between sessions, because change happens at home, not just in the office

What to expect

  • Sessions are 45 minutes and $300, in person at our Toms River office or by secure telehealth in New Jersey and South Carolina.

  • Full details are on the Fees and Insurance page.

  • The Therapy Cove is an out-of-network practice. We provide superbills you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.

Common questions

Do we both have to be fully on board? It helps when both of you are willing to show up, but being unsure is normal. Say so in your first session. We would rather hear it than work around it.

Can couples therapy help after an affair? Rebuilding trust after infidelity is part of our work. It is hard and it cannot be rushed, so the pace is set with both of you. There are no guarantees about how any couple's story ends.

We are not married yet. Is that okay? Yes. Married, engaged or dating, couples can start at any stage.

Do you offer online sessions? Yes, through secure telehealth for couples in New Jersey and South Carolina.

What if I do not feel safe with my partner? If there is violence, threats or fear in your relationship, tell your clinician privately before starting joint sessions. Couples therapy may not be the right first step, and we will help you find the right support.
