Life Transitions: Career, Retirement, Divorce, a New Baby, Identity, Grief and Loss
When the life you knew changes
Some changes are chosen, like a new career, a move, a new baby or retirement. Others arrive without warning, like a layoff, a divorce, a diagnosis or the death of someone you love. Even good changes can leave you asking, "Who am I now?"

Understanding life transitions
Transitions disrupt the routines, roles and relationships that give life structure. When those shift, it is common to feel:
-
Lost without a clear role or purpose
-
Grief for what ended, even when the change was wanted
-
Pressure to "have it figured out" before you are ready
Grief and loss deserve special attention. Grief is not a straight line or a set of stages to complete. It comes in waves and can show up as sadness, anger, guilt, relief or numbness. You can grieve a person, and also a career, a marriage, a version of yourself or a future you expected.
Lost identity often surfaces when a role that defined you ends: a job title, active parenting, military or professional service, or a relationship. Many people find this the hardest part of a transition to name.
Divorce reshapes nearly every part of life at once: your home, finances, routines, friendships and how you parent. It is common to feel grief, relief, anger and fear all in the same week, and to wonder who you are outside the marriage.
A new baby changes the whole family, not just the parents. Couples often find less time for each other and more conflict over sleep, chores and roles. Older siblings and blended families adjust too. If low mood or anxiety is part of this season, see our Perinatal and Postpartum page.
