Codependency and Attachment Patterns

When Relationships Cost You Yourself

Maybe you're the one everyone leans on, but you rarely feel supported in return. Maybe you find yourself in the same kind of relationship again and again, or you feel anxious when someone pulls away. These patterns usually aren't random. They are learned ways of staying connected.

Understanding codependency and attachment

Attachment patterns form early, based on how reliably our needs for comfort and safety were met. They shape how we act in close relationships as adults:

Anxious: fear of abandonment, needing reassurance, overanalyzing a partner's moods

Avoidant: discomfort with closeness, pulling away when things get emotional

Disorganized: wanting closeness and fearing it at the same time

Secure: comfortable with both closeness and independence

Codependency is a pattern of organizing your life around someone else's needs, moods or problems, often at the cost of your own. Signs include people-pleasing, trouble saying no, feeling responsible for others' feelings, and losing track of what you want. It often develops in families where love felt conditional or where a parent struggled with addiction, illness or instability.

The good news: attachment patterns can change. Adults can develop more security through self-awareness and new relationship experiences.

How we help at The Therapy Cove

This is deep discovery work, and it is one of our core strengths. Our clinicians help you:

  • Use psychoanalytic exploration to trace where your patterns began and what they protected you from

  • Recognize your triggers in the moment, including body cues like a racing heart or shutting down, and choose a different response

  • Set boundaries without guilt and ask for what you need

  • Build relationships based on mutual care rather than over-functioning

We see this work individually and in couples therapy, where both partners can learn how their patterns interact.
